The English department offers a four-year program designed to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and critical thinking. English electives address these skills as well. Four levels are offered in each grade. Grades in these levels are weighted for the purposes of determining class standing. While general curriculum goals are similar at each level, specific requirements and presentation vary. Summer reading will be recommended and requested of all students. Level 6 English will address skills to prepare for Advanced Placement (AP) English in grade 12. If numbers do not allow for a separate class, the Level 6 option will be offered within a Level 5 classroom. Students will contract with the instructor to receive Level 6 credit. This contract will outline expectations and standards for pre-AP work.
Students are required to pass English 9, 10, 11, and 12 to graduate. Electives may not be substituted for required English credit.
